It can be easy to forget about cleaning your bedding on a regular basis, or even not know how often it should be done. According to the Good Housekeeping Institute, all bedding should be washed every two weeks. Do you do it that often? Don’t feel embarrassed if not, as the vast majority of people only get around to it every few months.

However, just because others clean their bedding infrequently, it doesn’t mean that you should do the same. Regularly washing comes with multiple benefits, some of which may surprise you. Read on to find out more.

Kill bacteria

Even if your bedding looks clean and smells fine, if it hasn’t been washed for a while it’s almost certainly harbouring bacteria. Thousands of organisms can make your bed their home, migrating there from human skin and sweat, household pets and even the air.

Regular washing on a high temperature will keep these microscopic critters at bay as much as possible, helping you to maintain good health.

Deter dust mites

These can be found in most fabrics, eating dead skin cells and mould spores. Even if you have a fantastic skin routine and have never suffered from dandruff, we each lose around a million skin cells every day, which are usually too small to see yet are big enough to attract teeny-tiny mites.

These miniature arachnids can cause asthma, coughing, wheezing, sneezing, rashes, a runny nose and eye irritation, so the fewer of them there are in your bed, the better!

Remove germs

When we cough, sneeze and even just breathe, germs are released from our systems, often in very small measures. However, due to at least one person sleeping in the bed for multiple hours every night, these germs can accumulate and permeate your bedding.

By cleaning the sheets on a regular basis, you’re minimising the build-up of harmful germs, ensuring a hygienic place to rest your head.

Promote comfort and wellbeing

Crisp, clean and fresh-smelling sheets are super comfortable and promote an effective sleep cycle. This can go a long way to reducing restlessness and helps you to wake up feeling refreshed each morning. As a result of a tranquil night’s sleep, you’ll feel energised and ready to take on the day’s tasks without the grogginess.
